The Problem

Due to a non-disclosure agreement, we are unable to identify this client by name. The client is a global provider of compliance and professional skills training, with a courseware library used by enterprise clients across Asia-Pacific. Expanding into the China market required more than subtitle translation — their eLearning modules were built in PowerPoint and exported to video, with embedded narration, timed text elements, and animated layouts optimized for English reading flow. Direct conversion to Chinese produced text overflow, broken layout timing, misaligned subtitle cues, and narration that sounded unnatural when read by AI text-to-speech. The client had previously attempted localization through a general translation vendor and received learner feedback describing the result as 'robotic' and 'hard to follow.'

What We Did

MediaLocalize proposed and executed a three-track localization workflow. First, slide layout adaptation: each PowerPoint source file was reworked for Chinese text, which runs shorter than English at equivalent information density but requires different line-break handling, larger minimum font sizes for on-screen readability, and adjusted text box sizing to accommodate character-set rendering differences. Second, professional Mandarin voice-over: scripts were translated with attention to spoken rhythm, then recorded by a professional Mandarin voice actor with experience in corporate training content — warm, clear, and paced for comprehension rather than speed. Third, subtitle localization: SRT files were retimed to match the new narration pacing and reviewed for on-screen readability. All three tracks were reviewed in a synchronized quality check pass before delivery.

The Outcome

The localized courseware library launched to the client's China-market enterprise customers on schedule. Post-launch learner satisfaction surveys — conducted by the client using their standard evaluation framework — showed scores in the localized Chinese modules matching or exceeding the English originals. Several enterprise customers specifically cited the narration quality in feedback, describing it as 'professional' and 'easy to follow.' The client extended the engagement to cover new module releases on an ongoing basis, with a rolling delivery schedule aligned to their content production calendar.
