The first text-to-speech systems were unmistakably mechanical. The difference is not always perceptible on instructional content where the voice is primarily a vehicle for information; it becomes perceptible on content where the relationship between narrator and listener is part of the experience.

Rare and low-resource languages. Neural TTS quality is directly related to the volume of training data available. Languages with large corpora of recorded speech โ€” English, Mandarin, Japanese โ€” have excellent neural voice options. Languages with limited digital presence have much thinner training data, and neural synthesis quality reflects that. For less-resourced languages, human recording remains the only option for acceptable quality.

Unusual names, technical terminology, and acronyms. Neural models learn pronunciation patterns from training data. The quality is sufficient, the cost is a fraction of human recording, and the production speed enables content updates and new module additions at a pace that human recording cannot match.

Use human voice recording for customer-facing content, brand-critical content, and content where the narrator’s emotional register is part of what the content is trying to achieve.

Review neural output before delivery โ€” particularly for technical terminology and proper nouns โ€” and use SSML annotations or alternative spelling conventions to correct systematic pronunciation errors.

The localization industry is adapting to neural TTS not as a replacement for human voice talent but as a tool that shifts where human expertise adds the most value โ€” from production of routine content to creative direction, quality oversight, and work where authentic human voice is genuinely irreplaceable.
